In her article "The History in Church Worship", Elaine Schneider states that Christian worship music is based from old chants that were used in Catholic Mass. These chants were derived from Greek and Hebrew ceremonies. Over the years, musicians and pastors have changed these chants to be easier to understand and easier to say. They added melody and different harmony to the background and changed the language to match the country's main language (Schneider). Contemporary Christian music started in the 21st century when Christian rap and guitars were added to the music (Schneider).
Knowing where Christian music started, it is easier to know how far it has come. Christian music has come a long way from chants and foreign language. It keeps changing with the congregation (Schneider). Schneider states, “Religious music underwent a transformation to suit a changing and evolving congregation.”
